Information model

The IEC1850 standard is especially interesting compared to other data protocols since it besides being able to “move data packages” also contains a description of all components in the system which exchanges information.
The information model is built of “logical” building blocks which fundamentally follows the structures in the figure.
(FIGUR)
Every physical component is defined as one or more logical units (Logical Device) which each describes a part functionality (Data Objects) which through a number of attributes (Data Attribute) determines the information which can be exchanged with the data point.
The information model for IEC61850 is described in a subsection in the standard called: IEC 61850-7-4 and IEC 61850-7-420.
Fundamentally the single logical nodes can exchange the following types of information:
• General information about the specific logical node
• Status information
• Settings
• Measured values and calculations
• Control signals.
Which is described in details in the standard IEC 61850-7-3 called “Common Data Classes” (CDC).
